Thanx for the quick response, VE6CGX! I can't help wondering, however, whether you may have skimmed my problem description a little too quickly. I have loads of experience connecting to WiFi hotspots and understand their problems. My current problem, however, is an inability to reach the setup wizard within the WNCE3001. I am trying to do this with a direct hardwired connection to my laptop's RJ45 jack (as described in the Installation Guide), among other means, and suddenly having no success. When I try this, I am disabling all other wired and wireless connections on the laptop, as instructed in the Installation Guide. In desperation, I have also pushed the recessed reset button to clear out any prior setup within the WNCE3001. It is the Setup Wizard built into the WNCE3001 that is AWOL. I have also downloaded the latest firmware version (1.0.0.44) to the laptop, but of course cannot install it in the WNCE3001, since it is enforcing radio silence. Any ideas?

I see. ATM, is the unit still operational however erratic it may be or is it functionally dead? Reset buttons job is putting back the condition of unit to factory default state. Firmware is two part; CFE and firmware itself. If CFE is buggered up it is not wasy task to recover the unit back to normal state. Being unable to reflash firmware is the pointer. And what is the status of LED?

When I first posted the question, I was trying everything I could think of and at one point the wizard did come up, but I was not able to complete it. Since then, nothing. I think the thing just finally died. I have requested help from the company but am not holding my breath. Failing that, I guess I will need to find a competitor with a more reliable solution.

Doesn't the unit have a LED indicator showing status? Maybe your unit is not receiving strong enough signal from hotspot TX?
Could deacrease the distance between hotspot and your unit for testing? Status LED color and blinking rate will tell what's wrong.

I must say that at this point I am very dissatisfied with the WNCE3001 and NETGEAR. Be aware that the device is only about 10 months old and was only 8 months old (2 months out of warranty) when it started faling. I posted to this web site in hopes of getting support for the problem, which is at the RJ45 end of the device, not at the Wi-Fi connection end. I also sent separate emails to the sales and service departments at NETGEAR a number of weeks ago. I have received no response at all from the company and no ultimately useful help from this web site. I looked long and hard on the Internet for a competitor that could actually solve my problem and provide actually useful support. I finally found it in the Pepwave Surf On-The-Go (www.peplink.com/products/surf-on-the-go). One of its possible uses is to provide a bridge between a wired Ethernet connection and a Wi-Fi source. So if you have a Wi-Fi router with an RJ-45 WAN jack, you can run an Ethernet 10/100 base T cable from there to the Pepwave device and configure the latter to connect to the desired SSID. It all appears to be reliable and user friendly. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the NETGEAR WNCE3001 as a Wired-Ethernet-to-Wi-Fi bridge.
