Turns out WLAN AutoConfig was disabled! After enabling it, everything is working perfectly.

Tried without installing the genie?
Netgear's wifi adapters offer a "standalone" driver only option.
Sometimes Microsoft native drivers will work without anything from Netgear.

That also didn't work. Nothing happens once it's installed, and it's the same set of errors.

You might need to seek ideas in the wider world of Microsoft. Perhaps you need to clean out the past debris from Windows drivers.You may also need to ensure that the motherboard level of USB drivers is up to date. That's usually more a problem at the LAN level but you never know.

How did you pin it down?
Was it something that the network wizard would pick up?
Might help another poor victim in future.
