A7000.exe using 55% CPU when idle

I have an R7000 router and an A7000 WiFi adaptor. My PC's fan is constantly running and the PC will not sleep when idle.

I see that A7000.exe is using 55% of my CPU, which is astronomically high for a WiFi adaptor.

I tried uninstalling the A7000 utility but then the A7000 will not work at all. It does not work with any standard Windows driver.

It doesn't but it does have stand alone drivers you can install instead of the whole utility.
After you download it and extract it, simply run the standalone driver application and not the full utiliy

That's great! Can you show me where the driver is? The firmware available online only seems to be the entire utility.

that firmware you download? extract it. One of the names will say "standalone". Use that.

Just make sure to uninstall the full driver/utility that you used first.
