The problem with extenders is that they need a good signal to function.
so if you're moving it to an area where devices don't have signal, neither will the extender.
Optimum placement is halfway in between where you want signal and where you have signal. Provided that's a good signal area.
Another issue is thatt many things can block wifi signals. this includes hvac in walls, concrete/brick walls, foil insulation, adobe, plaster lathe, etc.
What are your interior walls made of?
How large is your home?
What router is it connecting to? This is key to as the router is the backbone of the system. If the router isn't decent, the extender won't function well either as its relying on the router.
Thanks for the reply - even keeping the extender in the same room leads to no internet, though don't have any of the things you listed that might impede the signals. I have kind of given up trying to fix it - very frustrating!
