Router is a Netgear D6400.
The extenders are wireless.
Reset the extenders to factory setup, downloaded the Nighthawk app for initial setup (which I did initially, but started from scratch again).
Logged on to the extender via browser for more options.
Now using a single extender on the 2.4ghz frequency only which appears to be working.
What other options might work better for me?
Thanks for the help.

Is your D6400 connected to DSL?
Or are you using it in just router mode?
I'm a fan of mesh systems like Orbi. And you can find a bunch of renewed orbi's on amazon right now. If you're not needing the fastest AX speeds, the RBK43 system is pretty solid and provides you 2 satellites.

Not entirely sure I understand the question. I am using the D6400 as my primary wifi router connected to my broadband supplier.
Anyway, problem solved. The Netgear extender products are going back and I have replaced them with a TP-link tl-wa850re which appears to do the same job for a third of the price and took 10 mins to set up.
In order to get full seamless wifi coverage my conclusion is that I will need to replace my current devices with a mesh system - attempting to enlarge an old network just isn't practical.
Thanks for attempting to help.

Just be advised that that tplink extender is a pretty base model N300 device. It isn't going to have much speed/performance. There's a reason its a 3rd the price.
