I have a mediacom modem and Im having a hard time installing this.

A little more details help.
1. Are you trying to install via wps?
2. Have you tried the manual install method with the netgear assistant?
-Both of these options are walked through on the support page with a video guide.
3. Where in the process is it failing? The more details you can tell us, the better we can help you.
4. What firmware is on t he extender?
5. Are you setting it up in the same room and then moving it after setup?
