Access Point for home

  I would like to add an access point to my home.  We cannot get great internet service so I don't want to compromise speed but would like to extend wi-fi signal area. From what I understand, an access point would be best to not limit speed but I know there are other options available also. 

  How do I go about dertermining which access point is best suited for my home?  What should I all look for?  Any suggestions would be great!
