Broadcast packets for wake on wan?

Hi there

I have a Netgear N300 WNR2000v2. I would like to use WOW (wake on WAN) with my windows home server. I know the wake on LAN is working but I have been told that my router must support broadcast packets to a .255 address?

Can anyone tell me if my router supports such a thing and what address my home server should use?

Many thanks

Joe

  • First - Wake on WAN requires the router support ip directed broadcasts, for security reasons this support is disabled by default and most consumer routers do not allow it to be enabled.

Second - WHS is designed to run 24/7 - you lose most of the advantages of having WHS if you power it off.
  • Thanks for your reply.

Ok does that mean it cant be done on my router? - is there any other way to wake the server from external.

Yes, but I'm not using a lot of the features so I'd rather put the WHS to sleep for power saving reasons.

    Thanks again
  • Hello

I've been advised to try to change the subnet mask on my router to 255.255.255.128 to reduce the IP address range and the new broadcast address will be 192.168.1.127

Does anyone know if this will work on my router and have a been informed correctly?

    Thank you
