Just to add, I'm trying to connect to a TalkTalk router. Thank you!

maybe the netgear was setup prior. Try a factory reset. While the extender is fully powered on, push and hold reset for 7-15 seconds. The lights should flash wen you've held it long enough.
Then try the install.
You can also hardwired into many of netgears extenders (not all) and set it up that route.
Btw, if you still have issues, some of talktalk routers don't play friendly with extenders as they make their own. Which one do you have specifically?

Hi, thanks very much for replying, much appreciated.
i've just tried the factory reset but it's still not recognising the router, unfortunately. The model is DSL-3782.
How would I do it via hardwire? Just plug an ethernet cable into both devices and follow the same procedure?
Many thanks again!

plug your desktop/laptop into the extender. Make sure the wireless is off on whatever device you connect to the extender. Or it'll default back to the valid wireless connection.
then try going through setup that route.
