Can’t find NETGEAR_EXT in my WiFi list

I'm trying to use the Nighthawk app to set up this extender but it keeps getting hung up when my iPhone can't find NETGEAR_EXT in the WiFi list. 

If it makes a difference, I'm using an Xfinity XB7 gateway modem. And the Netgear model I'm using says WiFi Mesh Extender on the box and features MU-MIMO, whatever that is.

    Once the device is setup, it uses the same ssid as the router does. So if you were going through setup and started the linking process with the router, it should be using the same ssid as the router. 

    have you tried the wps method? It'll use the same ssid as the router as well but sometimes works well.
