The model is EX8000. Following your advice I did a factory reset and thought I would be clever and install it manually. All went well but despite having the correct IP it would not do the final stages, I decided just to go again for a WPS install and that seemed to go well. I have reinstated the extender where it was and at the moment it shows 5 bar strength in that area though yesterday it decided to drop and show the red warning. I am hoping that the factory reset and clean installation may have cleared the gremlins regardless so fingers crossed.
I thank you both for taking the time to steer me. I'm not the brightest with these things so your answers gave me the confidence to go for an factory reset!!
