Connecting an Extender that has sat for two years...

Hello!
I'm attempting to connect a wifi extender.  I had purchased this extender right about two years ago from Amazon and it's pretty much sat in the box since then.

My router is a Hitron CGNVM 2559.

My extender is a Netgear EX2700

I've tried over and over to set up the extender, this morning.  I get all the way through the set up process but the Router light never shows up green and I get a message that my device (the laptop I'm trying to connect to the extender wifi signal) is not connected.

I'm wondering if there is a firmware or software update that the extender needs, being that it has set in a box for two years?  If so, how do I go about updating that when I can't get anything to connect to the extender?

Or is there another step entirely that I'm missing and/or making an error with?

Thanks for any help that may be extended here.  :)
