Good move to do it in the same room. Set up the extender and then move it.
What is the router? Did you tell it to forget the extender's earlier connection?
Can you get it to work without using WPS?
Another weird issue is that the MAC address on the device does not exactly show on my router logins. It is off by 1 letter.
These things can create more than one MAC address, for different wifi connections.

When you do get it to work, a better location might be in the middle of the gap between the router and the Amazon device.
