1. do the setup over a hardwired connection. tends to go smoother and work better.
2. try a different browser or pc/laptop. maybe its an issue with the browser or device.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've now tried on my wireless ipad and hardwired desktop with Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. The results are the same every time, timestamp expired. It only takes a minute or less to fill in the username, password, and security questions. It seems like a Netgear bug, but I don't know how to get their attention. Frustrated.

Have you tried factory resetting the extender?
push and hold reset for 7-15 seconds while the device is powered on?
Anothing thing to check is popup blockers or firewalls.
again, that error is usually fixed with a clear cache/cookings, changing browsers, or devices.
