EX6110 Extender WAS working great

So my extender was working great last year starting in February then in the middle of December it started dropping the connection. I changed the channel through my router and it worked for 2/3 of a day. Then I updated the firmware the other day and it was working like a slug.  Today I factory reset it with the Netgear support people and we got it back online but again, IF it is working it is working like a slug.  It shows 3 bars but connects and either no or extremely slow internet.

I have an AC1900 Model C7000v2 modem/router Docsis 3.0.  The internet service is going to 3.1.  Do I need to bite the bullet and get a new modem?

Thank you for your help.

    Two separate topics.

My guess is that the DOCSIS3.0 modem is probably compatible with the Internet Service Provider and will continue to provide the same capability that it has so far.  If the ISP offers faster service that requires a DOCSIS3.1 modem, then this unit cannot connect to that.  Combination modem/router devices are attractive from the standpoint of (a) taking up less physical space, (b) eliminating one Ethernet cable, and (3) saving money by owning a modem rather than renting one.  The potential downside is when the ISP offers an upgrade (such as DOCSIS3.1 or optical fiber)

If the EX6110 performance changed suddenly and nothing else changed, this is strange. (no heavy furniture/appliances moved around?  router and WiFi devices remain in the same locations?)
