When I have it right, there is no more strict binding 2.4 GHz <-> 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz <-> 5 GHz - well possible, the notebook with it's 2.4 GHz interface can connect to the extender, which again is bridged to the 5 GHz on the router.

so you're saying that the extender connects to the router via 5Ghz only, then operates on both wavelengths?

can anyone netgear confirm this?

    If your client is connecting to the 2.4 GHz extender SSID and you get DHCP served, and can access LAN and Internet....
