EX6150-100NAS - Extender or access point?

I am thinking of buying a EX6150-100NAS, but I have a couple of questions before I do.  If I set this up as an extender, I believe it shows up as a new wireless network.  If I log onto this wireless network, will it communicate with the current wireless network to be able to see and control devices connected to that network?  Also, if I set it up as an access point, will it maintain the security of the network?  Will it require a password to log onto the network, or will it be wide open for access?

  • I'd like to piggyback on your question.

    Is the ex6150-100NAS a "repeater?"

I suspect it is, but have never seen it referred to as such. A repeater simply repeats the signal of the router. We used them in the old days of networking to get beyond the distance limitations of ethernet. Does "extender" mean "repeater?"

If it is a repeater, it will require any authentication required by the main router/AP.

If you set it up as an AP, it works like (maybe is?) another router on the network which could have its own security standards. WiFi was in its infancy when my technical role took me out of networking.

I'd appreciate help with this too.

To answer your questions if you use it as a extender it becomes its own wireless network with a different SSID and password. If you set it up as a AP then it will just extend your network and keep the same security.
