EX6150 wifi extender set up

When using the nighthawk app to set up my 6150 wifi extender to my wireless network, I receive a message when scanning my cable modem's qr code that the code is invalid. I do not have an ethernet cord to plug directly into the device. How do I move forward with the set up? The cable modem is about 5 years old and it's from comcast xfinity. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    I've never scanned the routers qr code while setting up an extender. I even pulled up the install guide quick and it says nothing about that. 

    Try installing the extender either using wps or using the installation assistant from the install guide. They can be found here:
