Modem (if there is one) in front of this chain?

Centurylink fiber doesn't have a modem. It just has this OTN device that changes the signal from light to Cat5e, then said Cat5 plugs straight into the router, which connects to the internet via vlan & PPPOE authentication. You can use any router you want to do this, but the zyxel will allow for full gig speeds, whereas Netgear can't process the PPPOE calls as quickly, and the speeds drop to about 250 up/down if you remove the zyxel. So I use the Zyxel to handle the PPPOE & vLan, as well as all wired, but I have my netgear access point handling the wifi. I never have hiccups on anything wired to the router or the switch connected to the router, only with wifi devices connected to the access point.

I am wondering if I was hitting the cap of 32 devices connected on 5g network. I wasn't at 32, but was in the high 20s. I did a bit of moving things around today. Converted my Sonos speakers to SonosNet (hard-wire one, and they use their own network). Hard-wired my printer & work laptop. I moved my 4 wall-mounted fire-tablets to 2.4Ghz, which was barely being used. And I hard wired my 4 Roku boxes instead of using them on Wifi. We'll see what this does for me.

Where did you find the 32 limit? (And 5g is not 5 GHz, so what are we talking about here?)

How many devices are on 5 GHz? Most IoT kit is 2.4 GHz. So, you may be on the right track with your moves.
Or buy yourself an Orb system. (No, I am not on commission.) You will hit the wall again soon!

You know it makes sense.
