Centurylink fiber doesn't have a modem. It just has this OTN device that changes the signal from light to Cat5e, then said Cat5 plugs straight into the router, which connects to the internet via vlan & PPPOE authentication. You can use any router you want to do this, but the zyxel will allow for full gig speeds, whereas Netgear can't process the PPPOE calls as quickly, and the speeds drop to about 250 up/down if you remove the zyxel. So I use the Zyxel to handle the PPPOE & vLan, as well as all wired, but I have my netgear access point handling the wifi. I never have hiccups on anything wired to the router or the switch connected to the router, only with wifi devices connected to the access point.

I am wondering if I was hitting the cap of 32 devices connected on 5g network. I wasn't at 32, but was in the high 20s. I did a bit of moving things around today. Converted my Sonos speakers to SonosNet (hard-wire one, and they use their own network). Hard-wired my printer & work laptop. I moved my 4 wall-mounted fire-tablets to 2.4Ghz, which was barely being used. And I hard wired my 4 Roku boxes instead of using them on Wifi. We'll see what this does for me.

Where did you find the 32 limit? (And 5g is not 5 GHz, so what are we talking about here?)
How many clients can you connect wirelessly to a NETGEAR router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
How many devices are on 5 GHz? Most IoT kit is 2.4 GHz. So, you may be on the right track with your moves.
Or buy yourself an Orb system. (No, I am not on commission.) You will hit the wall again soon!
How many devices can my Orbi system support? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
You know it makes sense.

That top link you sent shows the 32 device limit on 5ghz (I was using 5g as an abbreviation for that, that's how I name my SSIDs). I had 27-29 devices on 5GhZ at any given time. Never at the limit, but close.
I had an Orbi RBR40 with 3 satellites for 4 months, but it was so frustrating. All of the satellites were using wired backhaul. Both the performance and the connectivity were not to my standards. Wired to my Zyxel router, I'd get 900 up/down. Wired to the Orbi instantly dropped it to about 300 up/down. Wirelss would be 250/500 down/up for a day, then drop to 20/20 after a day or so until I hard-reset. I spent months troubleshooting, trying old firmwares, every possible combination of channels and settings. Additionally, I wasn't pleased with which Satellite it'd choose, or when it'd choose 2.4 vs 5. The EX7300's ability to name 2.4 and 5 differnetly, as well as its speed, have been superior. The only issue with my EX7300 is these random dropoffs, else this is working pretty bullet-proof. Constant 350/500 down/up speed and no need for a reboot. This thing is a monster.
I have plans of 4 or 5 more things I can hard wire, this should get me down into the low-teens for devices I have connected. Oh the joys of a "smart home" and cutting the cord, eh? :)

I'm also having this issue, but in extender mode. I have the same modem and service you have. I don't think my issue is number of devices though - I'm really just using the extender to get wifi out to a security camera, but the camera drops out multiple times a day. So I only have 1 device connected to the extender for sure, but very little else I would wager (most should be going to the C3000Z). Have you learned anymore about this issue?
