Extending WiFi range through a brick wall

In my home office network I use  Netgear Access Point, linked via Ethernet cable to my router. I want to entend the range of the office wi-fi. I have installed the AC1200 range extender. However, even though this is positioned less than 5 m from the AP, the signal is poor, probably because it has to go through a brick wall. My idea is to install a second AC1200 range extender, drill a hole in the wall and connect up the 2 extenders via Ethernet cable (i.e. there are extenders either side of the wall). Will this work; if so, how do I set up the 2nd extender? If this wont work, any suggestions? (BTW, there is only one ethernet port in the AP and this is already taken up). Thanks

  • Daisy chaining extenders will result in terrible wireless throughput. If your extender supports Access Point mode, configure it as such, connecting back to your base router with an Ethernet cable. Stay away from extenders.

      thanks for useful advice re: extenders' performance. I already have an AP connected to the base router via ethernet cable. The issue is extending the range from that AP through the brick wall. If I replace the current AP with another router (i.e. ethernet link base router and second router), I could then connect the second router to the AP via ethernet, using that ethernet cable to "get through' the brick wall. Is that doable? I don't know whether one can link 2 routers together (I am a novice at networking as you can probably tell).

        You can daisy chain 2 AP's together. Or, if you can, put both AP's on a unmanaged (dumb) gig switch and run one cable back to the base router.

         

        Like this: modem-----base_router-----unmanaged_gig_switch-----2_AP's. Use the spare ports on the unmanaged gig switch for other devices.
