Help Choosing New WiFi Router
Hello,
I am planning to replace my current WiFi router which is no longer supported. I'm starting to get a lot of dropouts and mediocre speed at extended ends. I live in a relatively rural area so 100 MBPS is max service, but more than sufficient for my needs. My home is a two-level (basement and upper level), L-shape, 2400' with a partial interior brick wall. The long side of L runs north/south and short side east/west with brick wall running north/south about 1/3rd up off the south wall. The WiFi Router is currently located at about the midpoint of the long side of the L about 10' north of the intersection of the short and long part of L.
My demands include 3 laptops, 3 phones, one TV with FireTV with WiFi connection in family room, a second TV on lower level connected by Ethernet, an XBOX gamer on occasion when son home, 3 Sonos speakers, 2 Ring doorbells, and a few Amazon Alexa appliances. I don't expect much demand growth.
I'm neither cheap nor looking to waste money. My initial thought is WiFi 6 for long-term technical compatibility with Mesh to improve WiFi connections throughout house. I would initially purchase one "satellite" as I expect that will be sufficient.
I'm relatively technically capable, but travel frequently and my spouse is not patient with technology. It should always simply "do the right thing"...:). So, I'd like easy set up and remote access. Security is relatively important but clearly with Amazon and Ring I'm not paranoid (and have to compromise with a spouse who likes having convenient gadgets for me to manage).
I would greatly appreciate some thoughtful advice. I'm no hurry to purchase and expect I'll get a 2020 model unless there is a 2019 model at good value that will meet my needs. I'm fine waiting to let the "cutting edge" prices drop a bit.
Thank you,
Jim
