Home Network Setup Help
Hi Everyone,
So I have some complexity in my home network and I know I haven’t structured it optimally, I would like some help if you can recommend the best way to do this. I hope this is the right place for these kinds of questions.
So I have a 3 story home that’s about 1800 sq ft.
On the first floor I have a media closet with my Xfinity TV DVR, Apple TV, Amp, Nintendo Switch, and from my network equipment my Netgear CM1200 Cable Modem and a Netgear EAX80 (AX6000) Wifi Extender.
On the second floor, I have a network panel in a closet. I plugged the ethernet from the downstairs closet into a switch with 8 ports. The switch has a few ethernet cables that go out to my hardwired ethernet ports in 4 bedrooms back through the network panel. The switch also has one more cable that runs out to my Netgear Nighthawk AX12 RAX120 wireless router. It plugs into the Internet/WAN port of the router, and then I have one other ethernet cable that goes from one of the 4 router ports back to the switch. The Nighthawk also runs my WIFI network.
On the 3rd floor, I have one ethernet wall port connected to the 2nd floor panel. That port goes to a small 4 port switch that has 2 cables coming out, one to my iMac ethernet port and one to my printer.
Back in the first floor closet, there is a coax cable in the closet that plugs into the CM1200 modem for the Xfinity service, and then I have one ethernet cable coming out of the modem to the wall ethernet port that goes to my 2nd floor panel (and then the switch and the Nighthawk). The extender is set up to relay the Nighthawk WIFI network, and it has 3 ethernet devices in the closet plugged directly into it. I would like to hardwire the Extender to the network if possible rather than relay the WIFI signal, but not sure how to do this (can I do it directly from the modem, or does it have to come down from the 2nd floor router through the wall).
So it’s Cable Modem to 2nd floor network panel to switch. Switch goes direct to bedrooms and 3rd floor, and then also to and from Nighthawk router. Switch on 3rd floor to split to printer and iMac. Back to 1st floor, Extender amplifies wifi network and has 3 devices plugged directly into it.
Overall, I want my Nighthawk in the 2nd floor closet because it has the strongest range for covering the 2nd and 3rd floor. I have the Extender in the first floor closet to boost the signal for the first floor. If possible I would like to somehow hardwire the Extender. Is this ok how I set it up, or do I need to shift things around? I was wondering if it’s ok that the switch is before the router on the 2nd floor, or does that mess up the network.
Sorry for all the info, any help is appreciated. Feel free to ask clarifying questions, as I know this is confusing.
