What modem/gateway do you have?
What router are you connecting it to?
What firmware is on the extender?

I have a modem that is a netgear one, I don’t know which firmware it’s on and I’m connecting it to an asus router.

Which netgear modem?
What asus router?
The firmware is found on the status page of the extender. If you did try installing using the installation assistant, you'd have seen it on that page. Did you actually try installing using the installation assistant?

Does it matter based on my motem or router? Or firmware?

Yes it does matter. Some routers are mesh or won't work with other extenders.
Or if you're in a double nat situation (which would still connect but can cause issues)
As well as clarity on details of whether you actually did use the installation assistant.
