What router did you get?
Try factory resetting the extender. Push and hold reset for 7-15 seconds while its powered on.
then try connecting to the netgear_ext connection and using the installation assistant.
If you'd hit the wps on both devices, the ssid should have changed to the router ssid since thats a mesh extender.

You put your extender but what router are you trying to connect to?
where did it fail in the process? "didn't work" doesn't tell us anything of what happened, where it failed, or much of anything

The router is a TP-Link AC1900. "Doesn't work" means no NETGEAR_EXT appears as a connection, and the Router Link LED still does not light up indicating connection with the router.

1.tplink makes a lot of ac1900 devices. AC1900 is a speed not a model.
2. If you factory reset it, you won't get a connection to the router unless you install the extender.
3. What are all the lights doing? Color/blinking/etc
4. did you push and hold reset for 15 seconds on the extender while it was powered on?
5. another option is to hardwire a pc/laptop into the extender for setup. Just make sure to disable the pc/laptops wifi so it doesn't default back to that connection
