Mesh Extender versus Mesh System

I am using a R6700 router in my house, which is about 2500 square feet on 3 floors.   Overall it is performing very well, however once in a while I run into an issue related to a low signal.  I am considering purchasing the EX8000 mesh extender, and am curious about the difference between adding a mesh extender to my existing router versus purchasing a mesh system such as the Orbi RBK50.  Does the addition of the EX8000 to my existing router create a "true" mesh system, or would there be benefits to the Orbi RBK50 over the mesh extender?  I appreciate the help!

  • I've used both (ex8000 and RBK50) and it basically depends on your useage.

Does adding the EX8000 make it a "true" mesh system. Not really because there isn't a router controlling the system. Is it close enough that the average home user won't notice the difference? yes. It works well and provided your phone/pc/tablet is new enough, will roam like the orbi system will. it worked great at my place and i'm around 3200sqft. I tried it with an RAX200 and a C7800. Both worked well.

The benefit to the orbi comes if you're going to want more than 1 extender. Once you're needing more than 1 extender, its better to move to a full mush system like Orbi. But 2500sqft should be fine with 1 extender.
