Modem + Netgear (Wireless Router)

I have a netgear DG834Gv5 and an old (but stable) modem. I have been experiencing horrible speeds with the netgear device, my that I mean from being able to stream at 1080p without any lag, now I can only watch at less than 360p (without lag). i have numerous things, "tweaking MTU', changing DMZ server, port forwarding but nothing seems to work. So to get decent speeds I completely reset the router. So my question is, can I use my old modem for internet and my Netgear as a router?

  • Correction: I have a Netgear DG834Gv5 and a Sagem F@ST 1201. All help + suggestions appreciated :)
  • Ah okay. Well good news I added a usb fan onto the body of my DG834Gv5 and upgraded it to 1.6.0.34 and now it runs fine, not quite the speeds I was getting before but dropout issues have vanished and I am currently getting stable speeds of over 1MBps.
