Yeah, you'll lose half your speed in extender mode. You can leave it in AP mode and just set it with the same ssid/password. Devices will still roam to it just not as efficiently.
I suppose I could also do that and just make a second network, because it’s really only 1 room and 1 device where I have this issue. My fiancé’s work laptop. I’ll consider that too! Thanks for all your help!

My fiancé’s work laptop.In those circumstances, I'd give Powerline Ethernet a whirl. It can turn the mains power circuit into fake computer network. If the mains is up to it, Powerline can be more reliable, and quicker, than WiFi.
- It’s funny you mention that, I had that box in my hand at Best Buy yesterday and passed it up. Maybe I’ll try that!
I use Powerline for things that do not move around. TV, media player, Mesh satellite, receiver for Arlo camera base stations.
Has none of the hassle that goes with setting up wifi, and is less likely to fall over through interference. You can even get plugs that a built in wireless access point.
Not happy with wiring that has to cross isolators, fuse boxes and trips. But contrary to Netgea's warnings they don't have problems with dumb extension blocks.
