Need to get a wireless router

Hi...I am an idiot so appeal to your wisdom. Our old netopia router (att dsl) is in the basement with our desktop computers. We have one line running to the first floor for the laptop. Now I want to purchase another laptop, a streaming device for tv and a wireless router to serve them and work to the second story. What is compatible with that netopia device, etc.?
