However, after doing more testing I think the problem may be with my PC and not the extender.
With separate SSIDs on the 2.4G and 5G extender channels, if the PC (or any device) is told to "forget" that SSID, then it will not switch to it. Already knowing the password that works with an SSID is what makes connection possible.
