yes, many of netgears extenders (not all of them) support acces point mode. and most routers do as well.
You could buy an extender or router, run it in access point mode and have working wifi in the shed.

*should* work.
When it comes to people wiring/setting up their own stuff, I always preface with *should*. :)
I'd recommend at least a dual band extender or even checking out some of the refurb/renewed routers. benefit to the router is then you have a backup router if the primary goes down. just don't run it in router mode or you'll end up with a double nat issue.

How do you go about not running it in router mode??

Most netgear routers have access point mode. theres instructions for each router on their support site but here's the general overview article
