netgear dg834g v4

Can the NETgear dg834g V4 take an internet connection from a cat5 cable and send it out via wifi?? or does it have to be ADSL?
i have virgin broadband that has a cat5 cable out of the moden.
i am able to get the internet, also by pluging into a cat5 socket on the netgear and then taking another cat5 cable out and into my computer. so all devices seem to work fine. via cat 5.
but when i try wifi. although i have set up my password and I can also connect to the netgear with a smartphone via wifi, the internet does not get passed out through wifi.
it seems as though i can only use ADSL? or there is a switch i need to toggle?

- DG834G is NOT extender.. it is wireless router.
belongs http://forum1.netgear.com/forumdisplay.php?f=34 - So the only way to send internet to my smart phone is by the adsl port.
i only have an rj45 ethernet and usb on the out of my modem.
seems i need a new wifi box.
