netgear extender tech support scam?

I just bought a wifi extender which wasn't working so I called tech support. the man who answered had a thick Indian accent (I don't want to profile anyone but it seemed suspicious). He then directed me to download fast support which I was not thrilled about because you share your computer screen with them. He wanted me to log into my optimum and when I asked why he wanted the login he got agitated which was off-putting. The call ended randomly so I immediately felt uncomfortable and ended the screen sharing but he called back however he said he would give me a new screen sharing code but the call ended again and he never called back. this whole experience was just suspicious so I wanted to know if anyone else was instructed by tech support to follow the same steps/use screen sharing technology.
