Its a bit more than just plug and play but not a whole lot. setup is pretty easy with these devices.
Here's what I'd recommend. go here: https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-range-extenders/
then you can sort extenders by features you'd like. (access point mode isn't on there)
Once you've narrowed it to a few devices. Just pick the one you want and look up its manual (netgear.com/support/)
In the manual it'll tell how to turn access point mode on if its got it. Most of them do but its always good to check. (its mostly the base model devices)
again, or you can buy a router and run it in Access Point mode. Amazon has some pretty decent prices on renewed routers right now. Plus it gives you a backup router to use if your primary dies. (just make sure its ran in Access Point mode)

Many thanks, you make a very valid point :-)
Are you able to recommend a netgear "dual band extender" which can run as an access point?
The garage is 30m away from the house with no wifi signal currently, am I assuming correctly that the new device you recommend, I will plug this device into my structured cabling solution via the ethernet port in the garage and this new device will then communicate with the existing Netgear Knighthawk x6 to set everything up or is there more involved?
Thank you again.

Many thanks for your help with this, I think I am going to go for a NETGEAR 11AC 1200 and see if this works.
Thanks again.
