Are you connecting to the 2.4ghz or the 5ghz signal?
The 5.0 is broadcasting at 300 Mbps or greater. The 2.4 is 40 Mbps at best.
That's actually kind of expected. You can optimize a bit but 2.4ghz is significanly slower than 5ghz.
