Have you checked to see if you are connecting to the R7900 on one of the two 5 Ghz channels?

Yes, I have done a speed test on all 3 bands. 2.4 only pulls 40MB/s. It's ridiculous, I'm loosing so much bandwidth because it isn't transmitted

If the extender is reasonably close to the router, then it should be dedicating one of it's radios for the extender<->router backhaul (that's called "fastlane3" by Netgear. If you can see the radio being used on the R7900 device list, it would show the extender as being connected over 5 Ghz.
I'm wanting to confirm that setup.
