There is no performance penalty - you'll get the full throughput of the wireless.
If you're going to go this route you'll need to configure both the router and the access point to work, so to speak, in tandem - both will need to have the same SSID and security (both encryption and if you use it, MAC filtering), and you'll need to set them on different channels, preferably 5 channels apart (1/6/11) to avoid interference.
