WN2000RPT - dropping out TV when computer switched off

Hi I'm looking for some advice to help solve a problem.

My set up is a Technicolour wireless router which I have a wired connection to Internet TV and wired connection to an Internet ready PVR ( all in one downstairs room). Upstairs I have a second Internet TV and Internet ready PVR.

If all the PVRs and TV are plugged in to the same router (i.e. wired) the system works fine, you can see and control any PVR through any TV.

I don't want to run multiple wires from upstairs to downstairs, I bought a WN2000RPT with the idea that it extends the network and has four ports on the back that I can plug the TV and PVR in - extend the network and volia alls sweet.

This works fine - the extender identified the network, plugged in the TV and PVR and you can control any PVR through any TV, just as planned.

The interesting bit is that it works fine as long as the laptop is on and connected to the netowrk (i.e. wireless switched on). If the laptop is switched off, a couple of minutes later the PVR plugged into the extender dissappears off the list of available devices. Switch the computer on and it reappears.

The PC does not need to be connected (wirelessely) to the extender - it uses the router wireless network for internet.

Also, if the PVR on the extender is being used, switch off the computer and no problem, it keeps playing. Until you stop what you are watching and it then dissapears.

Any thoughts on where to start?

  • Let me see if I understand you correctly - when you switch off the laptop, which has no connection, either wired or wireless, to the extender, the upstairs PVR disappears from the list of available devices - is that correct? My first question is - on what device are you looking at this list of available devices - presumably, it's one or both of the TVs. If that is correct - I have a second question - can you, at that time, from the upstairs TV, see the downstairs PVR? What I am establishing here (or seeking to establish) is that the extender maintains it's connection to the router, and also to the TV. Another question - if you were to connect the laptop to the router using Ethernet - what happens - does the PVR reappear? What happens if you connect the laptop, again wired, to the extender - does the PVR reappear? Ideally what I would like to see done, is a device, a PC would be best, used to ping the missing PVR, after it has "disappeared" from the list of available devices.
