WN2000RPT security internet connection problem
First post - I hope this is the right section of the netgear forum!
I have a new WN2000RPT range extender that I am trying to use with my existing network. My existing router is a Netgear DG834PN. The computer I am trying to connect with is a Windows 7 x64 based laptop.
The problem I am having is that if my wireless network has security enabled (WEP, WPA or WPA2) I cannot access the internet through the WN2000RPT extender. If I disable security on my router, I can connect through the WN2000RPT just fine. I even did this and updatwed the firmware on the WN2000RPT just in case this was the problem.
I have tried everything I can think of.
If I have WPA security on, and try connecting to the 'netgear-EXT' wireless network, the setup browser initiates and finds all the neighbourhood wireless networks. I select my home wireless network ('home') and click 'continue'. It detects that it has WPA security and asks me to enter the password, which I do. I then click continue, but the wizzard goes no further, and I still have no internet access. I have tried this with WPA2 and WEP security (after of course changing it on my router and testing an internet connection still works by connecting through the router alone), and neither work. If I disable security on my router and then run through the netgear-EXT wizard, everything works fine! Obviously, I can't have an unsecured wireless network though!
Any ideas what I should try? I'm really pulling my hair out here. All signal stregths are strong by the way: 80% or so between the WN2000RPT and the router. When I connect with no security, the connection icon is coloured green.
Please help.

- Jack_AspirantSeems passphrase issue. Use ASCII and WEP settings.
- birketAspirantTried that. No difference.
Can only get internet access via WN2000RPT when security on router is set to OFF.
Any other ideas? - Jack_Aspirant
- foandyodieAspiranti have a BT hub 2 - windows 7
looks like i was not connected properly myself - basically internet explorer did not let me do it properly for some reason? - i downloaded firefox and clicked on the netgear_ext in the wireless connections then opened up firefox and typed in www.mywifiext.com, it took me through the wizard fine whereas internet explorer only went part way?? it automatically put my router name (SSID) and added _ext at the end of it, i connected then inputed my WEP key, now it is connect with excellent strength in the room i had a dead spot !!! Hurray...
maybe the instructions should be a little clearer - its trial and error - or looking through forums !! not great "netgear!" - jmizoguchiVirtuosoevery setup is different. copy/paste your to multiple thread really don't assist any.
some router may not communication with WN2000rtp correctly with encryption OP set to use. - eldanaldoAspirantJust been tearing my hair out over this one with the EXACT same problem and here's the solution.
Turns out this repeater's setup is NOT compatible with IE9 (possibly IE8 as well) so I've had to use Firefox portable to get it sorted as i didn't fancy installing the full Firefox.
Works like a charm - Flew past the applying security section and now i'm fully connect with WPA2 and hopefully you will be soon armed with this most valuable information :D - eldanaldoAspirantSetup will not work right though IE9 and will hang on the Applying Security section - You must use something like firefox and it will work like a charm. I wish I knew this a couple of hours ago to save me from a lot of stress with the exact same problem
- Jack_AspirantTnx for the info! Maybe IE 10 will be better…;):D
- kenkongAspirantI've tried everything listed in these forums including using different encryption, static ip, enabling DHCP from the hidden cnfg page, using different web browsers during setup and nothing seems to work. Here is a new twist though that I haven't seen. I can't get either my laptop nor my netbook to access the internet through the extender, however, my EVO (Sprint cell phone) can. Now how that makes sense, I have NO idea. I'm using a Motorola modem/router using WPA2-PSK AES. Like I said, I've tried using everything except WEP because a) im not familiar with it and b) it's allegedly weak. I can hardwire into the extender and access the internet just fine. The laptop and netbook connect to the extender, but nothing after that. If I turn off the security on the extender, they will access the internet. Frustrating to say the absolute least. Ideas, thoughts, cheers or jeers are all welcome.

Check carefully that no software firewall is blocking internet access.kenkong wrote: I can't get either my laptop nor my netbook to access the internet through the extender, however, my EVO (Sprint cell phone) can.
