I can get the extender to work but 3 weeks of trying to get it secure has failed. The netgear genie shows up (only one time and it too has gone by the wayside) but I can get about halfway through the setup and it freezes and then quits. I'm on an iMac but have also tried using windoze.

Try to reset your extender first. Then connect your computer directly to your extender using a cable instead of connecting to the default wireless SSID of the extender. Follow the steps to setup the extender again.
To the topic starter, you should try placing your extender on the same room where your router is for isolation. You may have to do the same thing that I have mentioned above to setup the extender. Please check if your computers really gets the Internet connection when they are connected to the wireless network of the router.
