Please note that this issue has now been (unexpectedly) fixed. I have had no connection problems for the last 4 days. The only thing that I have done is to reposition the wifi extender device.
Previously, with the wifi extender in its original position, I had no connection problems. However, I think recently (and unknown to me), some large objects were placed behind a wall where the wifi extender was located.
Now that the wifi extender has been relocated away from this "troublesome wall", I can connect to the internet, regardless of whether or not the other PC is connected to the internet as well.
I'm sorry for this "false alarm" post. Thanks for all ideas. Much appreciated.
