WNR1000 v2 as repeater?

Hi. I already had a Dlink router but the range isn't good enough to go to the other end of the house. So I bought a WNR1000 v2 at Best Buy to allow the range to be extended. I am not really sure how to get it set up, or even if this is possible. I set up the SSID the same for both routers. I changed the IP address to be one within the Dlink range and reserved it on the Dlink. Wireless computers can see the Netgear but can't get onto the internet. The internet still works on the Dlink in the original location. I tried pinging the Netgear from a computer attached to the Dlink but it couldn't send the packet. Any ideas what I can do? Or, do you know if this can even be done? Any help would be much appreciated.
