815s aircard read only mode help

So im currently looking to buy a used 815s on eBay but the guy says he will sell as is because it's in read-only mode. He says it should be able to be bypassed but after reading a post on the same subject, im kind of worried that they might not be bypassed. The guy said he couldn't reset the password, even after following page 93 instructions on a system reset.. Is this a problem that I need to be aware of?
