AC 6220: cannot connect to 5GHz in access point mode

Did you factory reset the beast after the firmware update?
Is the 5 GHz SSID broadcasting and visible?
Tried changing the wifi settings?
Is the Region correct?
There is a manual for the R6220 somewhere at the end of this link:

Remember, wifi is a two-way thing. The clients also have to play ball. Have you told them to forget the 2.4 GHz connection and set up the wifi link from scratch?

Thank you for your answer. What worked was to revert to factory settings after installing the new firmware (this seems weird to me). Everything works now as it should.

That is the first thing to try if you have problems after installing new firmware. Netgear sometimes includes it in the release notes.
