AC1750 R6400 USB Readyshare gets very hot

I have a Nighthawk AC1750 R6400 router and we plug a Sandisk USB drive into the front to use as a network storage device.
It gets really hot, and when it does, it disconnects and the drive doesn't work until it cools down.  It is always plugged in, but we don't actually use it that much.

How to prevent this?   That USB stick is very hot..  I've never felt one get that warm before.

What sort of USB drive is this? Solid state? Mechanical?

Does this happen if you have the USB drive attached to something else? A PC for example?

I have a couple of 2.5 inch drives plugged into a R7800 and all they manage to do is to get warm

It's just a little thumb drive..   Sandisk 128 GB or something like that.

When attached to a PC, it does not get hot at all..

It is currently plugged into the AC1750 R6400 router and is not hot, the drive is working fine and it has been plugged in for about 8 hours now..   But every now and then when I go to access the drive, it says it is not available, and if I pull the USB stick out, it will be toasty hot..   The plastic case will be very very warm, and the metal connector that houses the USB contacts will actually be uncomfortable to touch.
