AC3200 WiFi Cable Modem Router (C7800v2)

My work computer is hooked up to port 2 via ethernet.  The light was white until they had me set up a phone.  In this scenario, the ethernet goes into a block and then out of block into phone and then out of phone into laptop.  Is this slowing down the connectivity and, if so, is there a work around?  My understanding is that the blinking amber light indicates slow internet speeds for that port.

  • orange/amber on the ethernet ports tends to indicate a 10/100mbps connection and not gigabit.

I've seen many voip phones that only have a 10/100 port.

Is there a reason you have the computer connected to the phone and not using one of the other ports on the router?

It is a work laptop and only has one ethernet port on the computer which only allows for the connection the way they provided it.

"a block"?  "a phone"?  Have you any actual information on these
        things?

If the speed is higher without the mystery devices, then I'd conclude
that something about the mystery devices is making it slower.

The solution might be not to put a slow mystery device between your
router and your "My work computer".

Yup.  Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.
Look for the LED descriptions.  Further reading might not hurt, either.

Huh?  What, exactly, "only allows" what, exactly?  Why?  According to

        whom?

Why connect the computer to the (mystery) phone, instead of directly
        to the router?

If anyone knew what your mystery devices actually were, then it might
be possible to offer some specific advice.
