I found under where it wanted the 8 digit pin there was a link that said "or enter network key code" . I clicked on that and entered that fluffyship 347 and it worked. Problem solved. Thanks anyway.
I'm an old fart with a computer science degree. No big deal really. The version of windows was made before the need for ten digit passwords and therefore won't take the pass. Upgrade to windows 8/ 10 or download a version of Linux that has your laptops firmware pre-installed. The router is fine. The laptop is fine. The software / operating system is to old.
