Oh so true. BT is famously poor at communications.
The problem here is that we have two separate issues, the roll out of Digital Voice and broadband connections. How do the two come together?
Messages about Digital Voice often refer to the need to plug the phone adapter into the right sort of BT Hub. That brings many of us out int a cold sweat.
There is nothing I can find on BT's official pages that throws any light on that.

What's even more bizarre is that the BT shop sell Netgear routers! I appreciate it could well be a franchise but the GBP are not going to think that, only that something bought from "BT" will be compatible with their own broadband network!
