Cannot connect device to extender for setup.

I am trying to setup my wifi extender.  I cannot figure out why but I can't connect my device to the extender for the setup.  I followed the steps and my extender to connected to my router.  I know the default password is password but that isn't working for me and neither is my main router password.  I am not sure what to do as I cannot use the wps path to connecting.  Any help would be appreciated.
