The router page could not be found? Or the page for the upgrade firmware?
You don't say which version of the WNDR3400 you have, v1, v2 or v3. If you feed the correct number into here:
you can download a manual and that has the instructions you need.
You have already used the standalone Netgear genie. If you follow my earlier instructions on getting to the Router Settings, there is a Router Update tab on that page.

Maybe this is telling you that the security is not set. Did you follow my earlier advice on how to view the wifi settings?

And you need to connect both to the wifi?

[I can connect tablet/smart phone using wi fi.]
[Firmware needs updating. Tried to do so by logging into router but page could not be found.]
Is there a wired computer on the network?
That's the one to use to log into the router and update the firmware not a wireless device as you could make your router a door stop.
Log into 192.168.1.1 using a web browser and enter your users name and password when asked.
If all works allright you can do what need to router.
You will the version number of your router to get the right firmware for it.
The wndr3400v1 has a blue plastic doom over a led ring that lights up and flash when the wifi is in use.
The version number should be on the label on the buttom of the router.
The version one router does not how ever they change doom color on each version.

I am using a hard wired PC to try and update.
Model is a version1.
When I try accessing http://www.routerlogin.net.and also going through "genie" to update it comes up with the attached message on web.
With the Poweline product do you need to be on the same electrical circuit?
